How is Cork Leather made?
Cork leather is made from the bark of the cork oak tree. These trees, known as Quercus suber, are found in southwest Europe and northwest Africa. The bark of the tree is removed by skilled artisans, steamed, pressed and flattened into thin sheets of beautiful cork leather. The trees aren’t harmed in the process and once the bark is harvested from a cork oak, the tree is then left for 9 years until it is harvested again.
Not only is cork leather a totally sustainable and cruelty free material, the cork oak forest are home to many species of animal and bird, including protected species such as the Iberian lynx. Because of the increasing popularity of this amazing material, more and more forest are being planted and protected, therefor protecting essential natural habitats. Planting more trees is never a bad thing, right?
